When talking about the BARNS OUTFITTERS brand, it’s impossible to overlook the items crafted using the iconic "loopwheel" knitting machine. This vintage loopwheel machine, still in use in Wakayama Prefecture, has been in operation for nearly 100 years. The fabric it produces, knitted slowly and gently while absorbing air, is incredibly soft and offers a perfect balance of tension that wraps around the body, providing an exceptional wearing experience. Among these items, the "loopback" sweat series, a staple of the autumn and winter seasons, has long been beloved for its timeless appeal and is truly a symbol of BARNS OUTFITTERS' enduring standards. For the 24AW season, the second new color introduced is a deep, rich dark blue, perfect for adding a pop of color during the colder months. It’s the kind of color that stands out beautifully when worn alone and takes center stage in the autumn/winter wardrobe.

"The best everyday wear that blends in with daily life"

This is our original hanged knitting fabric, which we have carefully selected from the yarn. The greatest feature of this fabric is the coexistence of softness and firmness, which can only be achieved by a hang knitting machine that knits the fabric slowly and with plenty of air. Aiming to be an eternal standard item, a timeless standard silhouette is adopted. The result of pursuing a design and pattern that is simple and never boring, the three-dimensional silhouette and stiffness create a “standing” hood that gives it a presence that sets it apart from other hoodies. The luxurious specification also features an inlaid gusset, a detail of vintage sweatshirts.

The raglan sleeves allow for a wider range of motion and reduce stiffness around the shoulders when wearing outerwear, while the 4-needle flat seamer sewing process ensures a stress-free fit.

The softness of the fabric, born from the ultimate inefficiency, and the texture that improves as the garment is worn, is an expression unique to the “hanging knitting machine” that no other machine can imitate. The lining of the fabric allows it to be worn for a long period of time, from fall to spring.

"TSURIAMI"

The “loopwheel machine” was developed about 100 years ago in the Taisho era (1912-1926). The machine is suspended from a beam, and the weight of the knitted fabric accumulates under the machine. Also, because of the difficulty of maintenance and procurement of parts in case of breakdowns due to the old machines, they are very rare knitting machines that will eventually disappear. However, the unique softness and firmness of the knitted fabric, which is created by slowly adding air and minimizing stress on the fabric, is a characteristic of hang knitting that cannot be found anywhere else, and has been a staple at BARNS OUTFITTERS for many years.
