Crafted in Wakayama Prefecture using rare knitting machines from a century ago, this fabric is knit slowly and carefully to let the cotton breathe.
The result is a signature texture—exquisitely soft, with a unique tension that feels as though it is gently embracing your body.

"STAMPEDE"

This playful, pop-inspired design appears as if various stamps were pressed completely at random, then layered with freehand doodles. Look closer at each individual motif, and you’ll discover a diverse mix of military and collegiate elements, beautifully balanced to create a unique, hand-customized look. To match this artistic vibe, we utilized tailored printing methods for each colorway: a wash-out (faded) print for the White, and a half-rubber print for both the Black and Navy.

The neckline features a vintage-inspired binder neck, constructed by folding and sewing the binding directly over the body fabric. This specific technique provides outstanding stretch and long-lasting durability, ensuring this piece can be worn and loved for years to come.

The loopwheel machine knits fabric into a continuous cylinder. Taking full advantage of this, we utilize a "seamless body" (tubular knit) that features no side seams. While adjusting sizes on a pre-determined tubular body is notoriously difficult, we perfected the fit through meticulous pattern engineering—re-evaluating the sleeve attachment angles, sleeve widths, and contouring the lines from the shoulders to the upper arms to naturally follow the body. This precision tailoring results in a standard silhouette that looks exceptional when worn entirely on its own. While retaining a distinct vintage character, this piece is masterfully balanced to work flawlessly as both a standalone t-shirt and a layering piece.

We utilize slub yarn made from US cotton, deliberately choosing a yarn with more fuzz and hairiness than average to retain a crisp, dry-touch texture. By knitting this specific yarn at a painstakingly slow pace to trap air within the fibers, we have created a fabric that masterfully balances incredible softness with a rugged, uneven vintage character.

"TSURIAMI"

The "Loopwheel" (Tsuri-ami) machine was originally developed roughly a century ago during Japan's Taisho era. Suspended from overhead wooden beams, the machine knits at such a slow, natural pace that the finished fabric simply accumulates below, drawn down entirely by its own weight. Producing a mere 10 meters of fabric per day, this painstakingly inefficient method gradually faced extinction with the shifting times. Most manufacturers abandoned them in favor of modern high-speed circular knitting machines, leaving only a precious few workshops in existence today. Compounded by the extreme difficulty of maintenance and the near-impossibility of sourcing replacement parts for these antique machines, loopwheel knitting is a vanishing craft.
Yet, the reward is unmatched. By spinning ultra-slowly to trap air while minimizing stress on the yarn, it produces a unique softness blended with a resilient bounce and grit that no modern machine can replicate. This irreplaceable texture is why BARNS OUTFITTERS has proudly preserved this collection as our definitive, long-running core staple.
