These machines, which have been in operation for around 100 years in Wakayama Prefecture, produce fabric slowly and with plenty of air, resulting in an exceptionally soft texture, perfect tension, and a comfortable, enveloping feel. Among these, the Tsuriami T-shirt series, a staple for the spring and summer seasons, stands as one of BARNS OUTFITTERS' signature items. For the Spring/Summer 2025 season, a new design debuts — inspired by the iconic logo of a certain donut shop.

Founded in 1937 in North Carolina, the iconic donut shop made its way to Japan in 2006 — where it quickly became a sensation, drawing crowds willing to wait for hours. From the mesmerizing sight of donuts frying along a conveyor belt to the unexpected hospitality of being offered a warm, fresh sample while in line — it wasn’t just food, it was an experience. That name took Japan by storm. This tee pays tribute to that legendary brand with a design inspired by its classic logo, reimagined in a retro American diner style. For added character, the white and gray prints feature a washed-out finish, while the black uses a crack rubber print, each capturing a different kind of vintage vibe.

The neck is a binder neck, which is sewn across the body as seen in vintage models. This is a specification for excellent elasticity and durability, and to be used for many years.

By making the size regular, the characteristics of the hang-knit fabric can be felt to the maximum extent, achieving an eternal standard that is not affected by time.

The loop-wheel knitting(TSURIAMI) machine is a machine that knits fabric in a tubular shape. As a result, the fabric is seamlessly finished with no side seams, known as a "round body" design. This tubular body makes it difficult to adjust the size, so careful adjustments were made to the angle of the sleeve attachment, sleeve width, and the line that follows the body from the shoulder to the upper arm. By fine-tuning the sleeve width, a universally flattering silhouette was achieved, creating a well-proportioned fit that looks great even when worn as a single layer. While adopting vintage-inspired design elements, the garment features a timeless silhouette, making it easy to wear both tucked in or out.

Uneven yarns made from rice cotton are used, which have more fluff than ordinary yarns to retain a dry, crisp texture. The softness and rough texture are created by knitting the fabric slowly so that the yarn contains air.

"TSURIAMI"

The “loopwheel machine” was developed about 100 years ago in the Taisho era (1912-1926). The machine is suspended from a beam, and the weight of the knitted fabric accumulates under the machine. Also, because of the difficulty of maintenance and procurement of parts in case of breakdowns due to the old machines, they are very rare knitting machines that will eventually disappear. However, the unique softness and firmness of the knitted fabric, which is created by slowly adding air and minimizing stress on the fabric, is a characteristic of hang knitting that cannot be found anywhere else, and has been a staple at BARNS OUTFITTERS for many years.
